CK's Fuchs, a Dual Sports Star, Catching Fire
9/2/12 - 11:13 AM

Senior Jordan Fuchs stars in both Football and Basketball

Jordan Fuchs smiles at the mention of Bo Jackson, the first and only athlete to be named an all-star in two major professional sports.

Fuchs, a senior at Christ the King, is a far cry from Jackson, but as far as local high school athletes go, he is comparable on a smaller scale.

“His first year on the football field he led the CHSFL in touchdown receptions and in basketball he’s averaging a double-double for one of the best high school teams in the country,” new football coach Tyree Allison said. “He’s the high school version of Bo Jackson.”

The sculpted 6-foot-6, 215-pound Fuchs has emerged as a rare two-sport star in football and basketball for Christ the King, holding multiple Division I offers in each sport. It began last fall when he hauled in nine touchdown receptions as a wide receiver in his first year of organized football in eight years, and continued on the hardwood as a starting forward for the perennial city power.

He took it to another level this summer, alternating between the two. He traveled on the AAU circuit with the New Rens, an elite neophyte program featuring the city’s top talent, while still managing to attend football camps and keep up with his gridiron teammates in offseason workouts.

In August, he helped out at Christ the King basketball camp, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., got up shots for a few hours before adding a three-hour football workout.

“He’s a freak of nature,” running back James Coleman said.

Fuchs is determined to play both sports at the next level, difficult as that may seem. Connecticut, Rutgers and Iowa State have shown an inclination to give Fuchs the opportunity in both sports, though his ceiling, Christ the King coaches believe, is higher on the gridiron. Ohio State, Michigan, USC and Florida, for instance, have expressed interest.

With his size and speed, Fuchs is projected as a hybrid tight end, like the Patriots duo of Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski, assistant coach Willie Poole said. A former NFL cornerback and USC graduate, Poole would know.

Fuchs, furthermore, is raw with plenty of room for improvement, Poole said. He runs routes like a basketball player, boxing out defensive backs. Last fall, virtually all of his touchdowns came on jump balls or go-patterns — football vernacular for running straight.

“He has the potential to go to any level he puts work in to get to,” Poole said. “He’s really that talented on the football field and he hasn’t played [a lot] yet. He really doesn’t know what he’s doing and it’s happening naturally.”

Fuchs is a quick learner, his father Mike Fuchs said. The elder Fuchs remembers his son cleaning house in a pool hall without much practice handling a cue, and the first time he swung a golf club, he sent drives straight down the fairway out of sight.

“Whatever he does, even if it’s for the first time, it’s like he did it his whole life,” Mike Fuchs said. “He just picks up things very quickly.”

Jordan Fuchs said he feels he is ready for a monster year, buoyed by the tutelage of Allison and Poole and the experience he has gained over the last year. He has zeroed in on former Holy Cross star and Cowboys receiver Kevin Ogletree’s 19 touchdown catches, the most in CHSFL history.

“I think I’m going to bust that record wide open,” he said, showing his cocky side.

He isn’t ready to give up basketball, either, the sport he has played much of his life. Fuchs has a handful of mid-major scholarship offers. He has spoken to plenty of experienced Christ the King alums who tell him the odds are low he could stick with both sports. Fuchs listens, but doesn’t let it detract him.

“That makes me want to do it even more,” he said, cracking a large smile. “I believe in myself.”

Few expected he could succeed on the gridiron last fall, too. He isn’t out to prove a point, just to follow his dreams.

“I don’t want to give up a sport, knowing I can get a lot better,” Fuchs said. “My mind is made up.”

Who knows, one day in the future there may be an advertising campaign for him just like Bo Jackson.

“Jo knows” has a nice ring to it.

New Look Royals Ready for 2012 Season
8/22/12 - 11:28 PM

Christ the King’s players eased up, thinking Day 2 of practice was over.

Big mistake.

New coach Tyree Allison wasn’t happy with the way a few players finished up their springs.

“Again,” he barked.

This time, nobody broke into a jog. As they gathered together, not everyone took a knee -- one player sat down.

Another mistake.

“Get up,” the new Royals coach yelled. “We’re running again.”

A few players got on the teammate who extended practice.

Even bigger mistake.

“This is a valuable lesson,” he seethed. “Don’t blame the other guy -- pick him up.”

Such is life in Middle Village, where Allison is the new sheriff, a demanding former NFL player who is attempting to resuscitate a dormant program previously run by Chris Higgins. The CK math teacher and former Hofstra star is attempting to do so by remaking the program his way, holding players accountable for themselves and each other.

The team motto is “TBA” -- trust, believe and accountability.

“The main thing is to get them mentally tough, get them to buy into the system,” said Allison, 35, who has coached as an assistant coach at C.W. Post and Stony Brook on the collegiate level and at Long Island high schools West Hempstead and West Islip. “What I want these guys to realize is this is serious. We don’t want to be the joke of the conference. We have to do things right.”

The players have bought in. They respond to Allison with “yes, coach,” and met all of his strict off-season weight lifting and training requirements, which Buffalo-bound running back James Coleman described as “college rules.” The senior tailback, who was third in the CHSFL AA-A in total offense with 2,108 yards to go along with 20 total touchdowns a year ago, said the overall feel at practice is different because of Allison. Every detail is harped upon, and the players don’t mind because they know he’s in their corner.

“If he’s not out here teaching, he’s in his office working on schemes or calling a college coach about a kid,” receiver/tight end Jordan Fuchs, said. “He’s always doing something for us. ... He knows how to get people motivated, he knows what to say and he's very intense."

Coleman said: "It's a big difference. Players connect with him. We see him as an idol, he knows what it takes."

Allison does have a lot of talent to work with, starting Coleman and Fuchs, who is drawing tons of high-major interest from the likes of Rutgers, Connecticut, USC, Ohio State and Michigan after catching nine touchdowns last fall.

Quarterback Matt Gluick is back after missing plenty of time last fall due to injury. If the offensive line, led by senior offensive tackles Terrence Brown and Chris Banner and sophomore center Rashawn Williams, can give him time, Allison expects the Royals to ring up plenty of points.

“The sky’s the limit for these guys if they continue to take football serious,” Allison said.

Coleman will anchor the Christ the King defense at secondary, Brown, Williams and Banner will all be counted on up front and returning starters Josh Seaford, who led the divison in tackles last season, and Frankie Dimaiolo will anchor the linebacker corps. Allison is high on Fuchs and Coleman’s basketball teammate Thomas Holley, a 6-foot-5, 280-pound defensive tackle new to the sport.

“He’s definitely going to be a Division I prospect,” Allison said. “UConn and Rutgers like him. He’s the strongest kid on the team.”

One of Allison’s first moves had nothing to do with discipline or accountability. He posted the team’s ranking -- 19 out of 20 teams -- for all his players to see. That sparked the Royals’ inspired offseason training regimen and has them chomping at the bit to get the season going against Nazareth Sept. 8.

“It’s no respect for any of us,” Coleman said. “I took that personally. We have big-time players here. We’re trying to go to the ‘AA’ championship [game].”

Running Back James Coleman Verbally Commits to Buffalo
8/2/12 - 09:07 AM

Michigan, West Virginia, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple and Connecticut all visited with James Coleman at Christ the King.

The rising senior running back was impressed with the major BCS-level programs, but it was Buffalo and running backs coach Matt Simon that left a lasting impression, offering him a scholarship on the spot and making it clear he was their primary target.

“I felt like Buffalo committed to me first,” Coleman said. “I can succeed there, do big things. They weren’t scared to come after me.”

With that in mind, Coleman recently verbally committed to the Mid-American Conference school rather than wait for offers to come from said schools. Simon was instrumental in Coleman’s decision. The two talk frequently on the phone, as much about life as football, and Coleman thinks his future is brightest under Simon wing.

“His whole attitude, his aura, was different,” said Coleman, a first team All-Queens selection by The Post who was third in the CHSFL in total offense with 2,108 yards to go along with 20 total touchdowns last year. “He was a straight shooter. … When I verballed, I called him. We have a good bond.”

Simon, after all, has previously coached over a decade in the NFL, winning a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens in 2000. Plus, there will be an opportunity to play in the backfield at Buffalo as star Branden Oliver will be a senior Coleman’s freshman year. The Bulls recruited Coleman as a running back, his preferred position, while the other schools didn’t commit to him at that spot, floating the idea of him as a safety or outside linebacker instead.

“I think he’s going to be a breakout player for them,” Christ the King coach Tyree Allison said. “He had a great spring, he bought into the system. He’s going to have a really, really productive career at the University of Buffalo.”

There is a chance one of the BCS schools could make a run at Coleman. It would have to take something extraordinary to change his mind. Buffalo has everything he wanted, the opportunity to play right way, get a good education and coaching staff he felt comfortable with.

“Right now my mind is set on Buffalo,” he said. “It’s a good fit for me.”

Coleman has been in touch with Brooklyn Tech wide receiver Kyvaune Brammer, a Buffalo commit like him, and the two may visit the school together soon. Coleman was eager to make his decision so he could avoid any distractions for the coming season.

“I didn’t want to feel pressure on my back,” he said. “I feel like I commit now, I can relax, get my teammates better, get them more looks.”

It will be a busy year as he will also be a key part to the prestigious boys basketball team. Before hoops, however, Coleman is confident it will be a big fall in Middle Village with Allison, a former Hofstra star who briefly played in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints, taking over a talented group that includes wide receiver Jordan Fuchs, another two-sport star, among others.

“We’re ready to have a big year,” he said. “Everybody’s getting better.”

CK's Joyner tackles new position, heads to Cheshire Academy
6/17/12 - 09:58 PM

In a year where things didn’t go nearly planned for Kalief Joyner, the Christ the King star was thrown another curveball when he arrived for practice for the Empire Challenge.

“We are not really using a lot of tight end,” New York City and Lincoln coach Shawn O’Connor said. “So we asked him to make a sacrifice.”

That sacrifice was moving to defensive tackle, a brand new position for Joyner, a highly-touted tight end. He will be making his debut there Tuesday night at the end-of-year all-star game between the best players in the city and their counterparts from Long Island at Hofstra University.

Joyner was initially disappointed and shocked, but he never questioned the move.

“It was kind of difficult at first, but it’s for the team so I do what’s best for the team, make that sacrifice and get that 'W,'” Joyner said.

When the season began last fall, he was one of the highest recruited players in the city. Joyner performed well in offseason camps and held interest from UConn, Rutgers, Syracuse, Purdue, Maryland, Boston College and Penn State. A scholarship offer, though, never rolled in.

The Royals never quite lived up to the talent on its roster, going just 1-8. Coach Chris Higgins resigned after the season and was replaced by Tyree Allison. Joyner didn’t become a weapon until James Coleman was moved to quarterback late in the season. As a captain he took responsibility for CK’s poor play and knows it didn’t entice coaches to see him.

“The hype got to me a little bit,” the 6-foot-4, 240 pound standout said. “I thought I was going to get that offer. When it didn’t come it was a shock. I was disappointed, but you got to brush it off and have another year to get that offer. ”

He hopes it happens at Cheshire Academy, a Connecticut prep school. There, Joyner will try to get increased exposure and work on his academics. He’s been told by college coaches that there was not enough blocking on his highlight reel; his pass catching was never a question. Joyner said the goal has motivated him more. He is the gym four times a week.

O’Connor’s hasn’t seen him play tight end, but knows an athlete when he sees one and a kid willing to do whatever it takes to get better. Joyner said playing defensive tackle has given him a greater appreciation of the defensive linemen who have tried to block him over the years, saying he “feels their pain.”

“He’s a very good athlete,” O’Connor said. “Good size and a kid who adapts to coaching real well. Against this type of competition, he is doing a good job at d-line.”

Joyner is looking forward to a fresh start at Cheshire. First, he gets one more game as a New York City high school player.

“It’s an honor,” Joyner said. “All the greats play in this game. Just me being with these names is a humbling experience.”
